ARCHITECTURAL REPORT

INTRODUCTION

Memorialize / Remembrance/ Not Forgetting

“We say that thedead will live on in the memory of others, as if this were some kindof natural prolongation of their life. In reality, though, this is an act of resuscitation performed by the desire of the group not to allow the dead to disappear but, with the aid of memory, to keep them asmembers of their community and to take them with them into their progressive present.” (Jan Assmann)

The first and most common example of the culture of remembering is the commemoration of those who lost their lives. The recall is an emotional relationship. The same elements determine what is called cultural memory and goes beyond the frame determined as a tradition. The purpose of establishing a place with these facts and traditions is to ensure that such an event does not happen again, is constantly remembered and not forgotten.

In this context, our design proposal is to design a memorialize, remembrance and not forgetting place that represents the massacre that took place in front of the Ankara Railway Station, one of the busiest intersections in Ankara, on October 10, 2015. The main purpose of the project is to make this crowded and jammed area more functional and to provide a place where people can live yesterday today and the future.

DESIGN

Since the area of the Project is in a commonly used area and is a part of the memorial ritual, instead of being just a monument it should be a public space with an environmental design. Starting point of the project is based on the location of the shell over the area where the massacre occurred, and the relationship between the commemorative area and public space considered. While the shell offers a permeable area to all users, it also emphasizes the painful event experienced with the strong images it carries.

The shell acts as a cover hanging over the existing area. Welcoming the visitors from all the spaces surrounding the area, the shell also turns into a courtyard where the daily life continues.

The large gap on the shell describes the memorial square. This gap is reached by the help of a ramp that descends slowly over the crust under the ground. While descending from this ramp, the names of 103 people who lost their lives on the monument are read one by one.

MEMORIAL AREA

The shell surrounding the attack area and a rising-descending memorial area in the center of gravity of this shell were watched. The memorial area, which can be regarded as the main backbone of the square, is descended by gliding under the shell with a ramp / acting as a part of the articulated / memorial statue. In this area, which provides a panoramic view, there is an effort to detect 103 light tubes around and to fully comprehend the monument sculpture.

MONUMENT STATUE

Close memorial ritual, face to face with sculpture / hiding under the shell / close memorial ritual is performed in the low elevation region witnessed by the spiritual light beam of the light tubes representing 103 people. The materials and formal expressions used in the monument sculpture, "Peace, Labor, Democracy." Reveals the representation of their concepts. It refers to the concepts of formal deterioration and material change, massacre, death, remembering, not forgetting … in the inner structure of the gross pointer rising with a clear expression in the form of prism. The names of people who lost their lives in the slit formed inside have become part of the memorial sculpture with metal letters written on the corten plate.

RAMP

This ramp, which is a part of the memorial sculpture and wraps the vertical pointer tightly, contributes to the structure of the sculpture while allowing it to descend to the subfloor. It performs the recall ritual of people who lost their lives on the surface of the vertical pointer as they glide down.

LİGHT TUBES

Light tubes have been attributed to 103 people who died in the explosion. These glass tubes exist vaguely within a calm shell as semi-prominent focal points. The tubes that radiate algorithmically over the entire shell act as an oil lamp with the light emitted from within. For the area under the shell, it also assumed the function of natural lighting.

REPUBLIC SQUARE

The area, already mostly occupied by taxis, has only been used as a transit location. By lowering the floor quota in front of this square, the shell can be navigated by roads starting from one end of the area and continuing over the entire shell, spending time in private areas and relaxing. Also the park is available to different users at different times of the day, thanks to defined focal points and landscaping in the square. The area under the shell forms an upper cover for taxis.

HERİTAGE SCULPTURE

The “heritage” statue, which symbolizes the Anatolian civilization consisting of the winged Hittite lion(Chimera) and the figure of nasreddin Hoxha, still exists today as an artifact exhibited in the Square in front of the gar and remembered by individuals. within the framework of the design, the statue was preserved at the same site.

FRONT OF THE ANKARA RAİLWAY STATİON

Ankara Train Station Square was especially considered with the structure's gar function. The intense use of people here, the fact that vehicles come and go to this structure for continuity has caused the Shell, which is the main player of our design, to approach the Station Square from different parts of the building. When the shell is in the gar square it acts as a fringe and does not damage its silhouette. It gets as far away from the structure as it can and quietly exists there.

ANKARA SPORTS HALL

For this area, which has a space that can be considered to be of public nature, availability was considered especially on both busy days and at other times of the day. The shell approaches this area, acting as a fringe, creating a resting waiting area underneath. At the same time, access to the shell can be made from all directions thanks to the openings located near the entrances and exits of the Sports Hall.

TRAFFIC

Pedestrians have the right to live in urban centers shaped according to human needs, not Motor Vehicles.

Based on this statement, Our priority for the project area has been pedestrian comfort. The project area is located at the intersection of Talatpaşa Boulevard, Hippodrome Street and Cumhuriyet Street. The area overlooks the high traffic density , noise-heavy streets. As changes to the traffic flow chart would negatively affect all surrounding relationships and habits, we instead left the road flow chart as it is and addressed the traffic situation around the area. In particular, we limited the Access and exits to the Railway Station and the free movement of taxis in the surrounding area to a little bit more, allowing other areas to be used by pedestrians. In particular, we have enabled the Shell to act as a top cover for vehicles in some places alongside its pedestrian-oriented behaviour.

LANDSCAPE

Although the project area generally consists of hard floors, there are many trees. Our general purpose in this project is to protect the existing trees and create a continuous and maintenance-free natural cover on the bark. For this, we have used particularly durable tree and shrub forms on bark and in publicized areas.
