Architectural Documentation: Built Environment, Modernization, and Turkish Nationalism

ANAMED Kütüphane Konuşmaları serisi, 10 Eylül'de saat 18:00'da düzenlenecek olan "Architectural Documentation: Built Environment, Modernization, and Turkish Nationalism" etkinliği ile devam ediyor.

ANAMED Library Talks continue on September 10 with Serra Akboy-İlk and Suna Çağaptay. The talk is entitled “Architectural Documentation: Built Environment, Modernization, and Turkish Nationalism.”

This talk is based on the book, Architectural Documentation: Built Environment, Modernization, and Turkish Nationalism. In early republican Turkey, architects and scholars had all been in a position to advise on archival building documentation as the scientific basis to protect the built environment and to ensure its continuity for future generations. The question remained, however: how did the mission of creating measured drawings of historic properties met their goal of protecting the monuments? Was the goal to encourage broader historical understanding of architecture, denoting less need for detailed drawings, or to assist building reconstruction, entailing drawings with more information? Reflecting on the collection of field notes and formalized measured drawings as a whole, the talk addresses the enterprise of architectural documentation in the early republic. Suna Çağaptay will be the moderator of the talk. This month’s talk will be online.
