Ayvalık Rahmi M. Koç Museum

The restoration and implementation of the Ertemler Olive Oil Factory in Ayvalık with its former name, Ayvalık Rahmi M. Koç Museum with its new name, was carried out by EMR Architecture Restoration Application.

Edremit Gulf has been an important region for olive-related production since the ancient era. The production of olive-related products such as olive oil and soap, which were made using traditional methods until the 19th century became industrialized with the establishment of factories after industrialisation in the region. Ayvalık became the city where the olive-based industry developed the most in Edremit Gulf during this period. The industrial heritage based on olive products such as olive oil factories, soap factories and warehouses shaped urban architecture in Ayvalık. The heritage of the city was accepted to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List under the title “Ayvalık Industrial Landscape” in 2017.

The submitted Project which was built in the late 19th century is an example of Ayvalık’s olive-related industrial heritage. It is a two-storey factory building with masonry walls, wooden floors and roof with a brick chimney. The ground floor was used as an oil factory and the first floor, which was enlarged over time due to the increasing production was used as a soap factory. The restoration project of the factory building was prepared with the sensitivity to preserve the building’s original character and construction techniques by using developed technologies and techniques to enable the building to live for many more years. The basic principle of the project is to preserve the historical olive oil factory, which is one of the most important elements of Ayvalık’s industrial heritage that has survived to the present day holistically. The building will be re-used as Ayvalik Rahmi M. Koc Museum by its original heritage. Along with many objects and machines used since the Industrial Revolution, original engines and custom produced steam
machine used in the building during the factory era is exhibited inside the museum.

While the restoration project was being prepared, the façade layout of the original masonry factory building was preserved without any changes in line with the approved restitution projects prepared by examining the traces in the structure, the original details that have survived to the present day, historical photographs and documents. While preserving spatial integrity and continuity in the planning scheme of the building, care was taken to all the alternations due to strengthening requirements and increasing needs of museum function are reversible and distinguishable in a way that has the least impact on the structure.
