Within the scope of Kent95 Programme supported by Van Leer Foundation and in cooperation with Superpool, Marmara Municipalities Union and Global Designing Cities Initiative launched the “Street Interim Implementation Program” was launched with the aim of transforming city streets into livable, child-friendly public spaces that prioritize the safety of children and their caregivers, and thus all pedestrians. In September 2023, 8 municipalities, with the support of stakeholders, successfully transformed streets dominated by motorized vehicles into public spaces that prioritize pedestrians, particularly children.
The program aimed to design urban space with a child- and pedestrian-centered approach by moving beyond motorized vehicle-oriented approaches to urban design; to take steps to make streets safe, healthy, and inclusive for children; and to strengthen the capacity of municipalities in pilot implementation processes.
