Abstract:

“This seminar is on the urban architecture of the wholesale grain market of Ottoman Istanbul: Unkapanı landing square on the Golden Horn. Unkapanı, or Kapan-ı dakîk, literally meaning “the weighing scale of flour”, functioned as the official distribution center for grain (wheat, barley, oat and millet), challengingly, for four hundred years from the beginning of the Ottoman rule in 1450s up until the 19th century. In reference to textual and visual sourcesİstanbul’s Unkapanı will be represented with its singular edifices: a specific magazine of the weighing scale, a market house (çardak or divanhane) as the office of the market superintendent, a mosque, as well as smaller stores forming the urban fabric.”
