Gardens were one of the most important areas of cultural exchange between the Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire. Centuries-old political, diplomatic, and commercial contacts influenced Poles’ particular interest in the nature, art and architecture of the Orient. This phenomenon was reflected in gardens where many species of ornamental and exotic plants from that region were planted and grown. These sites also included valuable Turkish tents and decorative pavilions in the form of mosques, minarets, kiosks and baths. During the seminar presentation we will explore their most important examples to remind about the unique importance of Turkish influences for the heritage of the Polish gardens.

Jacek Kuśmierski, is a historic gardens specialist for the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów in Warsaw and a doctoral student at the Cracow University of Technology. He is the co-founder of the Eduard Petzold European Centre for Garden Art at the Sarny Castle, Lower Silesia and an independent collaborator of the European Route of Historic Gardens (ERHG). He is a member of the Polish Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Poland), the Association of Monument Conservators– Poland (SKZ) and the Association of Landscape Architecture – Poland (SAK). Jacek Kuśmierski’s research interests focus on cultural history of gardens, protection and conservation of historic gardens, landscape architecture, museum studies and garden tourism. His research on Turkish influences in Polish gardens was carried out in 2022 to 2023.
