TORRE RINALDA’S REFLECTION

We used the mirror effect, whose architectural counterpart is reflection and transmission, to allow Torre Rinalda to connect with other towers. Mirror effect is implemented with mirrored glass, which has variable properties according to different amounts of light similar to the smoke and fire method that has been used before. In other words, when the sun rises, the building act like mirror and conduct to all the things falling on it to those who look at it, while in the night, the structure is transparent for looks from outside and shines like firefly.

In that time, Torre Rinalda was used for military purposes. When the guardians detected the threat, they would go to make a fire on the roof to warn people and other watchtowers. To prevent looters from going upstairs, the ladder was designed to be lightweighted for lifting and destructible for emergencies. At the present time, there is no constructional connection between lower level with upper level. To demonstrate the temporality of this connection, we designed thin ceiling-hung steps. During the day, people on the upper floor of the building can see the view clearly. At night, due to the light intensity inside the building, it acts as a mirror for the people in the building. We use this mirror effect as a screen for projector in nights, to bring people together in this magical atmosphere. In addition to this, we planned the breakwater and sitting areas surrounding the tower. In this way, while protecting the historical building from wave erosion, we create a public space that centers the tower. In sum, Torre Rinalda still reflects its light to us.
